Prof. Zubair awarded IDB Prize in Islamic Economics
INCEIF's Professor of Islamic Economics, Professor Dr. Zubair Hasan has been awarded the 1430H IDB Prize in Islamic Economics. Awarded by the Islamic Research and Training Institute of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), the conferment is based on his accomplishments and tireless efforts in the promotion of Islamic Economics as well as Islamic Banking and Finance.
The award that comes with a cash prize of 30,000 Islamic Dinars (US$43,000) and a citation will be presented at a special ceremony to be held in conjunction with the 30th Meeting of the IDB Board of Governors in Ashkhabad, Republic of Turkmenistan in June 2009.
Dr. Zubair Hasan completed his education in India getting his M.A (Economics) M. Com and PhD degrees from Agra and Meerut universities. He joined the teaching profession in 1957 and having worked at a number of educational institutions in India - mainly the University of Delhi - and abroad he joined the International Islamic University, Malaysia (IIUM). There, he served as Head of the Department, helped in formulating and promoting the PhD program and won academic distinctions.
He presented papers, organized sessions on Islamic Economics, and served as discussant at scores of conferences, national and international. He has extensively published books, articles, chapters in books, comments and reviews in reputed academic journals worldwide. Some of these have been translated and published in languages other than English.
IIUM professor wins IDBs Islamic economics prize
25 JEDDAH: The Islamic Research and Training Institute has announced that Zubair Hassan, an Indian national who currently lectures at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in Kuala Lumpur, has been awarded the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) prize for 1430 AH (2009) in Islamic economics.
Hassan, who was selected in recognition of his contribution to Islamic economics, will be awarded $40,000, a citation and a badge with the IDBs insignia at the 34th IDB Board of Governors annual meeting in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, on June 2-3.
IDB President Ahmad Muhammad Ali congratulated Hassan and commended his contribution to Islamic economics and finance, wishing him further success in the future. He said the IDB created the prize in 1408 AH (1988) to encourage and reward contributions in Islamic finance and banking. So far, 29 scholars, researchers and economists from various countries have received the prize.
The Prize Selection Committee headed by Abdel Salam Al-Ibadi, secretary-general of the Fiqh Academy and former minister of awqaf in Jordan, met at the IDB headquarters in Jeddah on May 10 and recommended Hassan for the prize. The committee said its recommendation was based on Hassans great contribution to Islamic economics research. The decision was unanimous.
